Tertiary level institutions - universities and colleges, influence various dimensions of students' personal growth and development - psychosocial; cognitive; moral; and career development. However, in the Caribbean, until the recent introduction of MA in Higher Education: Student Personnel Administration, some student personnel administrators displayed deficiencies in the knowledge and use of theories in analyzing and understanding how student- behavior is related to student-stage- of- development in the named areas, and how to use needs based, theory informed programmes and activities to facilitate all aspects of student learning and development.
This course presents student learning and development theories that will arm student services professionals with the knowledge of the related theories which will enable them to:
- identify and address student needs, based on student- stage of development
- develop and implement programmes and activities that are designed to help students resolve their development challenges
- influence policy decisions in the provision of the necessary resources in order to facilitate student learning and development
- create healthy campus environments that encourages positive cognitive and affective growth and development
- collaborate with faculty to achieve a seamless approach to student learning and development
