This course examines the connections between sport and national movements in the Caribbean from the end of the 19th century to the late-20th. It looks at the introduction of sport into the colonial societies of the Caribbean and the role that sport played in these societies –focusing particularly on how sport was used to reinforce certain race, class and gender ideologies and support colonial rule. It then looks at the creolisation of these sports in the Caribbean and their consequent use as tools in local nationalist, anti-imperial and decolonising movements. Finally, it looks at the role of sport in shaping national identities in post-colonial societies.
