This course aims to explain the role of nutrition throughout the human life cycle and in determining patients’ wellbeing, its interaction with their medical/surgical/dental condition(s), and how to apply simple therapeutic principles to improve their nutritional state. It explores the application of diet, lifestyle and specialized therapeutic interventions to chronic disease, periods of vulnerability and nutritional disorders; as well as the importance of public health nutrition in assessing risk and preventing disease.
It does not seek to create clinical nutritionists, but rather to instill in students the idea that nutrition is a theme with which they need to be concerned and apply simple methods of assessment in every aspect of health and disease in patients with whom they come into contact.
