THE ATLANTIC WORLD 1400-1600 entails the study of the creation and significance of one of the most important regional systems in world history - the Atlantic World. The course focuses on how distinct and separate aspects of four key areas that surround the Atlantic Ocean (Western Europe, West Africa, The Atlantic Islands and the Americas) were integrated into a massive network of exchange. This exchange, which is commonly referred to as the Columbian Exchange, facilitated the long-distance movement of peoples, plants, animals, diseases, commodities and ideas from one part of the Atlantic World to another. As such the demographic, economic, political and cultural consequences are emphasized.
