This course is a study of trade unionism and the transformation of industrial relations practices in the twentieth-century Caribbean. The topics covered include the growth of an industrial labour force, intra-Caribbean labour migration, the evolution of working class organisations, women in the labour movement, working class protest with particular emphasis on the labour disturbances of the 1930s, the introduction and practice of collective bargaining, the emergence and impact of political unionism, and twentieth century changes in Caribbean work culture.
