This course examines the development and range of literary theory in the 20th century, with consideration of the nature and function of theory, and the ways in which theories define themselves in relation and contradistinction to other theories. There will be close attention to a selection of topics from the following: New Criticism. Marxist theory, Structuralism, Northrop Frye, Mikhail Bakhtin, Deconstruction, New Historicism, Feminist theory, African-American theory, Postcolonial theory, and Caribbean theory.
