Students attending secondary schools in the region are expected to take the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). These examinations invariably require internal school-based assessment. The post-secondary Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) of the CXC also require internal school-based assessment for all subjects. Additionally, the pre-CSEC examination of the CXC, the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC), has a significant internal school-based assessment component. Experience to date indicates that a number of conceptual and operational problems plague the implementation of the internal school-based assessment component of the examination. The experience with the CXC examinations is no different from that of similar examinations offered by other examination boards. This course focuses on current issues surrounding the implementation of internal school based assessment as part of a public examination. It seeks to provide participants with the skills necessary to guide the implementation of improved internal school based assessment practices and to advice on the proper treatment of a number of issues surrounding the implementation of internal school based assessment in a school or a cluster of schools, or at the national or regional level.
