HIST 3801 introduces historical archaeology as the interdisciplinary study of the modern world. Understood as more than a method combining written documents and material culture, historical archaeology studies the more recent past that still influences our world today, including colonialism, slavery, industrialization and globalization. You will see first hand how these significant historical processes influenced human experience at historical sites, including sites common in the Caribbean and North America like indigenous villages, plantations, military posts, port towns, and urban settings. Course assignments and in-class discussion will prepare you to provide a fuller perception of history accounting for the diversity of voices, sources, and sites in the recent past.
