The course “Essentials of English Grammar” presents an approach to English grammar which recognizes that the language varies across different regions where English is spoken either as a first language or as a major language of communication. Hence, some scholars have taken to using the term “Englishes”. You will be introduced to the terminology relevant to understanding pronunciation, lexicon, and morphosyntax, and become familiar with an inductive approach to understanding these different areas of grammar. The aim is to equip you with the tools for life-long language learning.
As part of the assessment, you will reflect on your own status as English language learners, demonstrate your understanding of relevant concepts, and practice the inductive approach to the analysis of English, as used by yourself and by speakers in other regions of the world.
