The course is designed to review the historical reasons for the growth of social change media, primarily within the Caribbean but within the context of globalization. Students will also discuss the democratic deficit of the dominant commercial and public service media, the recognition of the importance of communications among social justice movements, and the growing accessibility of new and old information and communications technologies and networking. This will broaden students’ understanding of media beyond traditional mass media and to introduce interpersonal communication and ‘edutainment’ techniques as important channels in the contemporary thrust towards public awareness building, social and behaviour change promotion, and community empowerment.
