Filmmaking is underpinned by the aesthetics employed within visual communication and exists in a cultural and historical context. In order to effectively tell a story utilizing film, a filmmaker must be aware of how the cultural, historical and technical perspectives can influence the aesthetics of visual narrative. In addition film genres relate to the presence of recognizable patterns and techniques in terms of setting, content, treatment and subject matter. Knowledge of genres and aesthetics in film and the use of iconography and symbolism are important factors in communicating with an audience.
