This course explores social constructions of masculinities and femininities in the Anglophone Caribbean region. The course focuses on the manner that linguistics, literature and popular culture reflect and contribute to gender ideologies that generally restrict men and women to narrow stereotypical identities and roles. It examines the diverse ways that men and women confront conventional gender relations to develop multiple and changing meanings about gender. Students analyse the impact of race, ethnicity, nationality, class, religion, sexual orientation, physical ability and age on patriarchal culture.
