The study of factors responsible for human health and disease is inherently multidisciplinary and Epidemiologists have a key role to play in the process. Sometimes referred to as the basic science of public health, Epidemiology involves the collection, analysis and interpretation of health-related data from all sources and, in turn, making recommendations for improved public health and clinical decision-making. Biostatics is an important science which is applied to the data analysis process in the study of plants, animals and humans. It is a critical tool in the design and execution of Epidemiological studies and allows inferences to be drawn about populations using sampling methodologies and statistical tests.
The course is designed to introduce basic medical science students to the fundamental principles and applications of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and will allow for a better understanding of disease distribution and risk factors among human populations locally and around the world.
