BIOL2312 will provide an introduction to Molecular Biology. The course will cover topics on the general principles of gene structure, organisation and function in both bacterial and eukaryotic cells and an introduction to recombinant DNA technology.

The course aims to familiarize the student with current topics in human molecular biology as well as the scope and limitations of the biotechnological developments in this area. Building upon the basic courses in molecular biology and biochemistry, BC34D will present topics in genetic diseases, inheritance and population genetics, immunology, viral infections, the cell cycle, cancer. The implications, scope, limitations and ethical considerations of research in human molecular biology, genetics, stem cell research, pharmacogenomics will be discussed.
