This course entails a study of the creation of one of the most significant regional systems in world history, a system unified by the Atlantic Ocean. The course focuses on how distinct and separate cultural and biological areas that surrounded the Atlantic were integrated into a network of exchange rooted in the long-distance movement of people, plants, animals, commodities and ideas. Demographic, economic and cultural consequences of this encounter are emphasized.
